How to get started and enrol

We understand that choosing a career path can be tricky. We're here to help. Speak to one of our friendly learning consultants who can help you discover the right career path.

If you have any questions or need help enrolling just call our Service Centre on 131 870 or pop into our Service Centre at 117 Henry Street Penrith. We're open Monday–Friday 8am–8pm and Saturdays 9am–1pm.

STEP 1 Choose how and what you want to study

Identify your preferred mode of study:

  • In-class or Online, TAFE Western Sydney Colleges
  • Distance/Online, OTEN
  • Combination, mix+match

STEP 2 Identify any Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or credits

Do you think you may be eligible for credit or RPL for any previous study or experience? Our Service Centre staff or college Customer Service can help you with RPL when you enrol. In most cases RPL can be processed after you have enrolled.

If you have previous study or work experience relevant to the course you are enrolling in, we encourage you to apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) when you enrol. This means you could be exempted from studying some units in your course and you may get your qualification sooner.

STEP 3 You will need to have a unique student identifier (USI) to enrol

All students participating in Nationally Recognised Training in Australia now need to have a Unique Student Identifier, or USI. This includes students completing an apprenticeship or skill set, certificate or diploma course.

A USI gives you access to your online USI account and will contain all of your nationally recognised training records and results from 1 January 2015 onwards. Your results will be available in your USI account in 2016.

When applying for a job or enrolling in further study, you will often need to provide your training records and results. One of the main benefits of the USI is that you will have easy access to your training records and results throughout your life.

How to create a USI

It is free and easy for you to create your own USI online at Your local Customer Service office can also provide further information and assistance. If you already have your USI, use this number to enrol with TAFE Western Sydney.

What is a Unique Student Identifier (USI)?

  • It is made up of 10 numbers and letters

  • Gives you access to an account that contains your completed training records and results from 1 January 2015 onwards

  • It will help you provide evidence of your studies when you apply for a job or undertake further study.

Retrieving a forgotten USI or USI password

If you have forgotten your USI, don’t worry as this can happen to anyone from time to time. It will only take a couple of minutes for you to get it back.

This USI registry system has developed fact sheets for learners that will assist you retrieve your Forgotten USI or Forgotten Password.

STEP 4 Fees and Payment Options


Many of our courses offer online applications and payment. The link to enrol online is on the course pages of our websites. We have many payment options available. You can pay in full upfront or pay by instalments as long as you're not registered for VET FEE-HELP. Students studying at Diploma level will be able to apply for a VET Student Loan.

In person

You can visit:

  1. Our Service Centre in Penrith at 117 Henry Street Penrith; or
  2. One of our college locations to enrol. Ensure you bring any documentation or evidence as requested; or
  3. For OTEN, course information is available (Mon to Fri) 8.30am to 5.00pm at 51 Wentworth Road Strathfield or through our Service Centre in Penrith (Mon to Fri) 8.00am to 8.00pm and Saturdays from 9.00am to 1.00pm.

By phone

  1. TAFE WSI and mix+match: Call our Service Centre on 131 870; or
  2. OTEN, you can register and pay over the phone 131 241, 8.30am to 5pm AEST. (Suitable for eligible TAFE NSW concession and exemption registrations).


The fees for your course are listed on the course page. If you are paying on campus, please note that for security reasons, no cash can be accepted. You're able to pay by cheque (payable to TAFE NSW), postal order, Visa, MasterCard and EFTPOS.

Enrolment sessions

Enrolment sessions are designed to give you the opportunity to:

  • receive friendly and helpful information from our staff to ensure you enrol in the course that is just right for you
  • talk to teachers about what you will learn in the course and what the vocational outcomes are
  • ask for advice about entry skill levels needed to succeed
  • find out about our support services
  • discuss and apply for recognition of your previous learning and/or experience, so that you do not need to study what you already know
  • ask any other questions.
